SoFi student loan refinancing review for dentists

The short answer

SoFi is a direct lender with a dental resident refinance, no origination fees or prepayment penalties, and a soft-pull rate check. It fits private-practice associates who've ruled out PSLF and RAP; skip it if you're on a PSLF path, and compare RAP before taking its resident loan.

Verdict · It depends

Worth a soft-pull quote if you've ruled out PSLF and RAP

  1. Its advertised ranges include 0.375 points of discounts that need autopay and SoFi Plus.
  2. Its resident loan adds unpaid interest to your balance when residency ends; RAP waives it.
  3. The SoFi pages we opened don't state its hardship or death and disability policies. Ask before you sign.

SoFi is a direct lender that markets student loan refinancing to doctors and dentists, including a loan for dental residents. This review covers what SoFi’s own pages said on Sept. 26, 2026, what they left out, and when a dentist should skip it.

We don’t give star ratings. Whether SoFi is right for you depends on your job, your income and the other quotes you get.

Quick verdict

SoFi can fit you if:

  • You work in private practice and have ruled out PSLF.
  • You earn well above what RAP forgiveness would need, so paying the loan off is the plan.
  • You’ll use autopay and qualify for SoFi Plus, since its advertised rates assume both.

Skip SoFi, or wait, if:

  • You work, or might work, for an FQHC, the VA, the military, a dental school or another PSLF employer.
  • You’re in residency and could be on RAP instead. More on that below.
  • You want a lender that publishes its hardship and death and disability policies up front.

Refinancing with SoFi, or anyone, turns federal loans into private ones. For those loans you lose RAP, PSLF, federal forgiveness, and federal forbearance and deferment, permanently. SoFi’s medical professional refinancing page says the same in capital letters.

Rates

SoFi’s current fixed and variable ranges are in the dated rate table on this page, from SoFi’s rates page. Two things the range alone won’t tell you:

The ranges include discounts. SoFi shows its rates with a 0.25% autopay discount and a 0.125% SoFi Plus discount. If you don’t use autopay or qualify for SoFi Plus, expect a rate up to 0.375 points higher than the range suggests.

That gap matters. Example: $300,000 over 10 years at 6.0% fixed APR is about $3,331 a month and $399,674 in total. At 6.375% fixed APR it’s about $3,387 a month and $406,487. The 0.375 points cost about $6,800. Not an offer; your rate depends on credit.

Variable rates follow SOFR. SoFi adds a margin to the 30-day average SOFR and says the rate may change monthly. Its disclosure says variable rates will never exceed 13.95%. For when a variable rate makes sense, see Fixed or variable rate when refinancing.

Terms

SoFi’s rates page lists five term lengths, shown in the rate table. Longer terms cost more in total. SoFi notes that you may pay more interest over the life of the loan if you refinance to a longer term.

You can pay the loan off early: SoFi says there are no prepayment penalties. For how term length changes your total, see Paying off $300,000 in dental debt.

The dental resident loan

SoFi offers a medical and dental resident refinance. You make a reduced minimum payment during residency and a six-month grace period after it. SoFi calls that stretch the residency period.

The reduced payment may not cover the interest. SoFi says any unpaid interest is added to your principal at the end of the residency period, and interest then accrues on the larger balance. Its disclosure warns this will likely cause negative amortization. SoFi is the only lender we’ve checked that adds that interest to principal.

RAP works the other way: it waives the interest your payment doesn’t cover. That’s why, for most residents, staying federal until you’re an associate costs less. The math is in Refinancing during residency.

Three details from SoFi’s fine print, as of Sept. 26, 2026:

  • Who qualifies: a dental or medical resident or fellow with a DDS, DMD, MD or DO. SoFi’s pages disagree on how much training you can have left. Its eligibility page says up to seven years; the rates page fine print says up to four. Ask.
  • Minimum loan: the eligibility page says $5,000; the legal page says $10,001 for the resident loan. Residents of Mississippi and Montana aren’t eligible.
  • A dental-only line: SoFi’s disclosure says dental residents and fellows can’t receive “additional tuition liabilities” during the residency period. Ask SoFi what that means for your program before you apply.

Protections

This is where SoFi’s pages were thin on Sept. 26, 2026.

  • Unemployment protection. Reviews elsewhere describe a SoFi program that pauses payments after a job loss. We couldn’t confirm it: none of the SoFi pages we opened described it, and SoFi’s help-center section on it returned an error. Ask SoFi for the current terms in writing.
  • Death and disability. SoFi’s help-center article on this also returned an error. SoFi’s own guide says private lenders aren’t legally required to cancel loans when a borrower dies, and that it depends on the lender’s policy and your loan agreement. Get SoFi’s answer in writing and read the promissory note.
  • Pauses. SoFi’s disclosures mention that the autopay discount is suspended during deferment and forbearance, so some pause options exist. The pages we opened don’t say who qualifies or for how long.

Federal loans, by comparison, are discharged if you die or become totally and permanently disabled. That’s one more thing refinancing gives up.

Fees

SoFi says there are no application fees, no origination fees and no prepayment penalties. The refinance pages we opened didn’t state a late fee.

Eligibility

From SoFi’s eligibility page, criteria current as of December 2025:

  • At least the age of majority in your state; a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-permanent resident, with ID documents.
  • Employed, with enough other income, or with a job offer starting within 90 days.
  • At least $5,000 of qualified education loans from a degree-granting school that was Title IV eligible when you enrolled. The minimum may be higher in some states.
  • Loans you’re still using for a program you’re enrolled in can’t be refinanced yet.
  • Residency loans aren’t eligible. If you took a residency loan, SoFi won’t refinance it.
  • Available in all 50 states and D.C., plus Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa.

SoFi also weighs your credit, financial history and monthly income against expenses. The pages we opened don’t list a minimum credit score or income.

How to apply

  1. Decide you’re a refinance candidate. Use the refinance vs forgiveness tool.
  2. Check your rate. SoFi does a soft credit pull that won’t affect your score.
  3. Get two more quotes for the same term and rate type before you continue. A marketplace like Splash shows several lenders at once, and its resident option is a SoFi loan (see our Splash review).
  4. Ask SoFi in writing about unemployment pauses and death and disability discharge.
  5. Continue your application with SoFi only if it’s the best offer. That’s when SoFi does a hard credit pull.

SoFi also runs a medical and dental referral bonus. Read Refinance bonuses: how they work before letting it sway you.

APRs are the ranges each lender advertised on its own site when we checked, and most include an autopay discount. Your rate depends on your credit, income and term, and variable rates can rise.
